The history of the Rolex Datejust
The first Datejust was designed in 1945 to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary. Since then, it’s reinvented itself on more than one occasion.
While originally only available in 18k yellow gold, Rolex released stainless steel and two-tone versions in the 1950s. Design aside, the watchmaker brought innovations to the space. The Rolex Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch with a date window. Not so unexpected today; pioneering back then.
The Datejust II arrived in 2009, boasting larger cases and the new Rolex Calibre 3136 movement. It’s now one of the oldest collections of watches Rolex still produces today. That means every used Rolex Datejust for men and women has set the standard for Swiss watches at some point in time.
Rolex Datejust models to get on your radar
The Datejust is a true icon in Rolex’s line-up. That said, most models in the collection aren’t particularly hard to come by. Some combinations are rarer than others, such as the Jubilee 41 with a blue dial and fluted bezel.
Watches with unique dials, such as Onyx, Meteorite and Malachite dials, also stand out in the collection, so look out for those.
If you’re looking for the most valuable second-hand Rolex Datejust, it’s worth knowing some solid 18k gold models with diamonds can fetch over $43,800.
Men’s & ladies’ Rolex Datejust watches in the media
Dr. Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill and other historical figures once wore a Rolex Datejust. In modern pop culture, celebrities who love their Datejust include Michael Buble, Kourtney Kardashian, Roger Federer and David Beckham.
In film, Matthew McConaughey wears a Datejust in The Wolf of Wall Street, as does Paul Newman in The Colour of Money. Rolex Datejust watches have also been spotted in James Bond and American Psycho. All films tell the story of luxury and prestige in some way - a fitting set for the Datejust.

Is the Datejust an entry-level Rolex?
