The history of the Rolex Submariner

Launched in 1953, the Rolex Submariner led the world of diver’s watches thanks to pioneering features like the graduated rotatable bezel and a luminescent display for readability even in murky waters.

It was brought to life to conquer depths that other timepieces hadn’t dared to venture. The debut Submariner (generally accepted to be the Ref. 6204) was waterproof to a depth of 100 metres.

The line has evolved technically and by design since its inception, with updates like a growing case and iterations of the dials and markers.

Today, every modern Rolex Submariner for sale can reach depths of 300 metres - a far cry from the Rolex Sky-Dweller that’s made for pilots and world travellers.

The most valuable Rolex Submariners for sale

If you’re looking for a pre-owned Rolex Submariner, it’s good to know which models are the most in demand. Right now, that includes versions with a “Big Crown”- 6200, 6538, A/6538 and 5510.

One of the most popular versions is the Rolex Submariner 16610. Collectors love it for its appearance and versatility. It’s just at home at a black tie event as it is on a scuba dive.

The most expensive used Rolex Submariner sold at an auction was a Ref. 6538 with an “Explorer-style” dial. It picked up $1,068,500 in 2018.

Rolex Submariners in culture and the media

The Submariner has built a cultural relevance beyond the expectations of the early days, when it was a purpose-built diving tool. That’s mostly because it went on to become 007’s diving tool.

It got plenty of airtime on James Bond films, with him wearing the watch a total of eight times - pairing it with everything from wetsuits to tuxedos.

You might also have spotted a Rolex Submariner in Hollywood hits such as Apocalypse Now, Jaws, Titanic and The President’s Man.
