The History of TUDOR
Over the last few years, TUDOR watches for sale have exploded in popularity. Plus, with a touch of Rolex magic going into each one, you know you’re buying a timepiece you can count on. But let's look at where TUDOR came from.
The TUDOR brand was born in 1926 at the hands of Hans Wilsdorf. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Wilsdorf also founded Rolex.
“For some years now, I have been considering the idea of making a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standard of dependability for which Rolex is famous. I decided to form a separate company, with the object of making and marketing this new watch. It is called the TUDOR watch company.” - H. Wilsdorf

An Evolution in Design
In its early days, TUDOR watches were mostly created with a rectangular dial, for both men and women. Some rare models also display the Rolex name, which existed to guarantee the technical and aesthetic quality of the watches.
Unarguably the most iconic TUDOR men’s watch, the Black Bay, didn’t launch until 2012. However, it takes its inspiration from the Submariner design — a timepiece with a legacy that stretches back to 1954. The line of descendants that followed has been worn by everyone from divers to war heroes, and from celebrities to the everyday person.

Frequently Asked Questions about TUDOR Watches
Which celebrities wear TUDOR watches?
Brand ambassador David Beckham presented the latest TUDOR watches to collectors, journalists and industry professionals at Watches and Wonders in Geneva in March 2023. He reflected on the brand’s #BornToDare mission and discussed the new variations of the 41mm Black Bay, including the steel bracelet and rubber strap options.
Other A-listers that sport TUDOR watches include Lady Gaga, John Mayer, Will Smith and freediver Morgan Bourc-his.
We also see a TUDOR Heritage Chrono on Tom Cruise’s wrist in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. In a behind-the-scenes video, Mandarin popstar Jay Chou showcases a TUDOR as he trains in a 450-horsepower sports car.
Does Rolex make TUDOR watches?
TUDOR is the sister brand of Rolex watches, founded by the very same Hans Wilsdorf. Wilsdorf set out to create more affordable versions of Rolex, that were just as reliable and beautiful. Far from just becoming a poor man’s Rolex, TUDOR watches for men and women have grown in popularity and it’s become a covetable brand in its own right.
As the younger sibling, TUDOR gets more experimental with its style — we’ve seen bronze, titanium and ceramic cases instead of the stainless steel and precious metals that Rolex tends to stick to.
The main difference, though, is the price point. TUDOR watches for sale start at $2300 for a women’s Clair de Rose, but you won’t pay less than $5700 for an entry-level Rolex. The most expensive TUDOR watch ever sold was a vintage Big Crown Submariner ref 7924, going for $162,500 at auction. In 2017, a Rolex sold for $17.8 million.
Which TUDOR men’s watch is the best investment?
TUDOR’s interesting heritage, celebrity endorsements and unique in-house calibres catch the eyes of both new and experienced collectors. But which TUDOR men’s watch should you consider if you’re looking to make an investment rather than searching for a starter watch?
Certain TUDOR men’s watches are better at holding their value than others. If you want to buy a TUDOR watch for an investment, the first thing you need to do is make sure it’s in very good condition. Second, is there a large gap between supply and demand? If a TUDOR watch is in short supply, it is sure to hold or increase its value.
The Heritage Black Bay, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight and the Black Bay GMT have proven to hold their value well. Plus, some vintage TUDOR watches like the Submariner and the Tiger are worth more now than when originally released. This isn’t the case for every TUDOR watch. So, if you’re interested in exploring TUDOR watches for sale for investment reasons, we recommend having a chat with the team at Trilogy first. We can advise on the rarest pieces out there right now and work on adding them to your portfolio.
