The history of the Patek Philippe Nautilus

The first Patek Philippe Nautilus watch was conceptualised in 1976, following closely in the footsteps of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and cementing a place for luxury stainless steel watches.

It was first sketched on a piece of paper by Gerald Genta, who had spotted people from Patek Philippe in a restaurant. Although the sketch took mere minutes, the Nautilus put the brand back on the map.

It was responsible for refreshing Patek’s image. The watchmaker went from making delicate watches from precious metals to this steel icon that somehow maintained the traditions, craftsmanship and grand complications that define Patek Philippe.

The most iconic Patek Philippe Nautilus watches

Patek manufactures a relatively small number of Nautilus watches each year, increasing the exclusivity factor of the line.

One of the most in-demand Patek Philippe Nautilus watches is the Nautilus 5711/1A, which commemorates the 30th anniversary of the first Nautilus, and honours the original style closely. Other models to know about include the Nautilus Date, Nautilus Moon Phases, Nautilus Annual Calendar and Nautilus Chronograph.

Nautilus in the media and on-screen

The legacy watchmaker has touched almost every cultural corner. Patek Philippe was once worn by Albert Einstein and Princess Diana. More recently, hip-hop artists have (quite literally) been singing the brand’s praises. In 2017, one-third of the songs on the Billboard Hot 100 mentioned the Patek Philipe brand.

A symbol of prestige, history and quality, notable celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jay-Z, Gisele Bundchen and the Prince of Qatar, Sheikh Joaan love their Patek Philippe Nautilus watches. Paul McCartney wears a Patek Philippe Aquanaut.

FAQs about Patek Philippe Nautilus

How many Patek Philippe Nautilus are made each year?

Patek Philippe makes around 60,000 watches each year (in comparison, Rolex produces around 1 million annually). Of the 60,000, it’s difficult to say how many are Nautilus watches - Patek keeps its production numbers close to its chest.

How hard is it to buy a Patek Philippe Nautilus watch?

Patek Philippe Nautilus watches are highly sought-after by collectors and investors, with limited quantities manufactured annually. There’s an estimated eight-year waitlist for a Nautilus, so patience is important if you want to own one.

You can, however, buy a Patek Nautilus at Trilogy Jewellers. If we don’t have the model you want in stock, just ask about our sourcing service.
