The history of the AP Royal Oak
Audemars Piguet had a bold idea: To create an “unprecedented steel watch” for all occasions, with the most beautiful finish the market had seen. Gerald Genta “the Picasso of watchmaking” conceptualised the AP Royal Oak and the collection launched in 1972. It was inspired by a traditional diver’s helmet.
It was a gamble by the brand. This was a line-up of luxury, steel sports watches that were more expensive than their gold watches. It paid off. The Royal Oak marked an entrance into a new era of watches for Audemars Piguet.
Your guide to pre-owned Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
Every AP Royal Oak for sale is an example of the brand’s diverse designs that all manage to meet the brief of an octagonal bezel and the ultimate luxury.
The first Royal Oak A-series, as recognised by ‘AP’ initials above the 6 o’clock mark, is still the most sought after by collectors. The subsequent Series B and Series C pieces come in second in the collectability stakes.
Some more notable styles include the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, the Royal Oak Tourbillon and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph. Reference 15202, or the “Jumbo” released in celebration of the Royal Oak’s 40th anniversary, remains one of the most popular versions to this date.
The Royal Oak in the media
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak has gained international acclaim through collaborations with known watch enthusiast celebrities like Tom Brady, Travis Scott and John Mayer.
It’s also regularly spotted on the red carpet and the silver screen.
“I have been a fan of the brand for a long time and a loyal customer, and I often chose Audemars Piguet watches to complete the looks I showed on the catwalk.” Tamara Ralph, Red Carpet Couturier
