Which brand makes the best unisex luxury watches?
It’s no secret that the world’s biggest luxury brands are placing a bigger chunk of their focus on the unisex market. We’re seeing more timepieces that bridge the gap between men’s watches and ladies’ watches, without compromising design, quality or performance. And it’s your current favourite brands that are leading the way.
The Rolex Day-Date and Rolex Datejust are arguably two of the best unisex luxury watches. The Day-Date (or “President Watch”), available in a multitude of sizes and colourways, was the first wristwatch to display both the date and day of the week. It’s been worn by figures from the Dalai Lama to Jennifer Aniston.
Another gender-neutral favourite is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Its iconic octagonal bezel and steel case make a bold statement for both men and women. It’s a classic watch that looks just as good on LeBron James as it does on Serena Williams. Other unisex designer watches to look out for come from the houses of Patek Philippe, Chanel, Omega, Cartier, Franck Muller and Tudor.
How do you know if your watch is unisex?
The line between what defines a “men’s watch” and a “ladies' watch” is blurring. Thin straps and diamonds are no longer viewed as the sole domain of women; chunky timepieces aren’t just for men. An understanding of the infinite and fluid tastes of their customer means decision-makers at luxury watch brands are bringing more unisex designer watches to the counter.
This was clear to see at Watches and Wonders 2023, where more watches with androgynous appeal were unveiled. While features of a unisex watch do vary, some common themes were smaller case sizes, embellishments, sporty aesthetics, and grand complications on thinner straps.
Ultimately, though, you can identify a unisex watch as anything that both a female and a male would be proud to wear. It’s not about lumping customers into segments, but seeing each as an individual who can choose the watch they wear —regardless of its marketing material.
